Do you recognize the iron sandstone used in the churches, parsonages, and other important buildings in the Hageland region? This rust-brown stone was once mined here in abundance. You can still find traces of quarries on the characteristic Diest hills, such as the Eikelberg in Gelrode and the Wijngaardberg in Wezemaal. This walk takes you from the Moedermeule—an authentic grain mill dating from 1667—on a journey of discovery through the land of iron sandstone.
