Departure: Saint Lawrence Church - Zammelseweg 195 - Geel

The first half of the walk follows the banks of the Grote Nete. This winding river has a surprisingly fast current. We pass by the 'Trammeke', a unique mobile dam. Further on, across the river, we see the beautiful Castle of Merode, surrounded by lovely ponds and stately avenues. The castle is still in the hands of the family and is therefore not open to visitors.

We then leave the river and walk through the woods towards the Abbey of Tongerlo. These woods are on sandy and heath-like soil, giving the landscape a very different character from the green banks of the Grote Nete.

The abbey itself is not accessible, but the abbey church can be visited. We then return to Westerlo through the fields. No catering on the way.
