The Schulensmeer was formed in the 1970s when sand was sought for the construction of the E314 highway between Lummen and Aarschot. At the same time, a retention basin was planned in the Schulensbroek to better control the Demer. By extracting sand at the retention basin site, only one location of farmland needed to be sacrificed.

The lake is named after the church village of Schulen, located on the road between Hasselt and Diest. Nowadays, the Schulensmeer is a beloved nature and recreation area, ideal for walks, fishing, and enjoying nature.
