From the center of Wilsele-Putkapel near Leuven, you can walk to De Gevel Nature Reserve, an old Dyle meander just across the border with Rotselaar. The area was originally called Gever, derived from the Germanic word “gabra,” which means “swamp.” Waterproof footwear is recommended despite the boardwalks. The reed beds and the surrounding wet forests form a rich bird habitat. Regular visitors include the great egret, the golden oriole, and the marsh warbler.

The approach to the forest, which makes up half of the hike, is along a busy bicycle highway and streets without sidewalk. You will therefore have to deal with 10 or so recreational cyclists, as well as many cycling enthusiasts on their road bikes.
